It is allergy season, and many people are finding ways to steer clear of pollen, hay fever, mold, dust mites, pet dander and other common allergens.
From an HVAC perspective, here are a few tips to keep allergies at bay:
- Keep your ducts clean: Replace your furnace filters, and clean your ventilation ducts regularly. Some experts say a filter should be replaced once a month.
- Keep the clutter low: Dust mites accumulate where there’s plenty of clutter. It offers a surface area for dust. Keep the excess papers and trash to a minimum. If you have dust mites, wash all clothing and bed linens in hot water, and clean your carpets with a filtrated vacuum.
- Eliminate moisture: If mold is your nemesis, use a dehumidifier around the home to help battle bold and keep the indoor air dry. When you shower, use the exhaust fan before, during and after.
- Keep an eye on pets: Pet dander can be tough, particularly if you have small children who love their dog or cat. If your animals are indoors during the winter, do your best to keep them off your furniture and away from where you sleep. Also, wash your hands frequently.
